Compression without the math
Compression is the most misused knob set on the console. Here is what each control does in plain words, and where to start.
The four knobs
Threshold decides when compression starts. Ratio decides how hard it pushes down. Attack decides how much of the hit gets through untouched. Release decides how fast it lets go. Everything else is refinement.
Starting settings
Vocals: ratio 3:1, attack medium, release fast, aim for 3–6 dB of reduction on loud parts. If you hear pumping, slow the release. If transients die, speed the attack. When in doubt, record without compression — you can always add it later.
Frequently asked questions
Should I compress while recording?
Only lightly. Heavy compression is irreversible; a little safety compression is fine, the rest belongs in the mix.
